HIJACKERS TARGET WOMEN AND CHILDREN

On Tuesday the 17th of February 2009, our Crisis Centre received a call reporting that a VW Polo had been hijacked from a young Umlazi woman who had been driving her children home. Fortunately, our Ground team was only moments away from Jacobs Road, Montclair when our Crisis Centre got into contact to notify him that the car had been located in that area. Just a moment later the VW Polo sped right past, resulting in a car chase and a shootout which left our vehicle with several bullet holes in the exchange of gunfire, one of the bullets just missing him as it passed through under the seat hitting his door.

Not long after the "cat and mouse" chase began the Polo lost control and crashed into a scrap yard, the three armed hijackers got out of the car attempting to flee but we managed to wound one of the suspects, leaving the suspect unarmed.

With the help of the South African Police Services - Durban South Dog Unit; Sergeant Rodrigues's dog managed to tackle the second suspect down into the bushes and was then arrested, the third gunman escaped.

This has been one of many cases that our Teams in Durban have witnessed and a situation that has kept our Gauteng teams on high alert too, as it has become a trend for hijackers to take advantage of vulnerable situations by attacking women with their children.

Police from the Provincial Car Hijacking Task Team are investigating the hijacking and are attempting to link the arrested suspects with other hijackings where women and children have been targeted because of their 'weakness', it has been reported that in the past three weeks of schools being open, over five Mothers have been hijacked outside of school premises with their children. Capital Air will continue to assist with this situation as it seems that these hijackings increase rapidly on a daily basis.
